India celebrated ISRO's successful launch of Chandrayaan 2 mission.

Chandrayaan 2 mission could make India the fourth country to make a soft landing on the Moon - after the US, Russia and China. India could also become the first country to make a soft landing on the far side of the Moon.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Monday (July 22) successfully launched Chandrayaan 2 mission with the aim of exploring the far side of Moon.

A live broadcast showed images of the rocket, carrying the unmanned Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft, blasting off from Sriharikota.

The boosters separated safely as the craft began its nearly 50-day journey, after which the lander will attempt a controlled landing to deploy a rover at the moon`s south pole.

The spacecraft had been successfully injected into the earth's orbit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the launch and congratulated ISRO scientists.

ISRO also said that 7,500 people watched the launch from the viewing gallery at Sriharikota.

ISRO is seeking to make a soft landing on the far side of the Moon and explore the area where it suspects the presence of water.
