Riga: Days after the roof collapse of a supermarket here killed 54 people, the Lithuania-based chain’s management has sacked its Latvia head.
Gintaras Jasinskas, chairman of Maxima Latvia, was fired after he made controversial remarks following the incident, the BBC reported.
Jasinskas had said: "It is those who feel guilty who resign."
He said this after Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis announced his resignation owing moral responsibility. Jasinskas was asked by reporters whether any company executives would follow Dombrovskis.
Last Thursday’s tragedy is the worst in Latvia’s history since it gained independence in 1991.
Jasinskas had said that he felt "responsible, but not guilty" for the incident.
As per structural experts, the roof caved in because it could probably not bear the weight of a garden being built on the roof.
Maxima operates supermarkets in all three Baltic states.
