Los Angeles: A small earthquake has rattled the greater Los Angeles area, shaking buildings and waking residents. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The US Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.9 hit at 4:07 am today (local time).

It was the second earthquake in less than a month along the Newport-Inglewood fault. A magnitude-3.5 quake hit the same area on April 12.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said early today that it briefly went into "earthquake mode." The alert was lifted after its helicopters surveyed more than 470 square miles (1,200 sq kilometers) in the area and all 106 fire stations conducted safety checks.

The quake was centered just north of the cities of Inglewood and Culver City.
