Islamic seminary issues fatwa against 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' slogan

Hyderabad: In what may possibly hurt the sentiments of zillions of Indians, a top Islamic seminary Jamia Nizamia here on Friday issued fatwa against chanting of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' slogan.

While issuing the fatwa against the slogan, the seminary declared that in Islam chanting 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' is prohibited.

As per a Times of India report, explaining the rationale behind the ruling, Mufti Azeemuddin, who heads the Darul Ifta, or fatwa centre of the seminary , wrote that according to the principles of reason, only a human gives birth to a human and treating the "land of bharat" as a mother is against "reason".

"The mother of a human is human. No piece of land and no animal and no other object gives birth to humans," an excerpt from the fatwa reads.

The seminary, however, further clarified that it will be considered as an individual choice of a person if he/she wishes to treat land of Bharat as mother and the person cannot force others to believe this.

The fatwa has been issued days after AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi triggered controversy when he said that he will not say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' even if a knife is put to his throat.

His remarks later sparked outrage with many Muslims across the country condemning them.
