Berlin: Germany has become the first European country to recognise the third gender known as the intersex. Babies born without clear gender-determining characteristics now will be registered without a sex on birth certificates.
With the new law, the parents now will be allowed to declare gender of their newborn as "undetermined" or "unspecified" on their birth certificates.
This law will take the pressure off the parents who were used to make hasty decisions on sex-assignment surgery for newborns.
Accroding to the new law, if a child cannot be assigned to female or male gender, their status "shall be entered without such information in the register of births.
The move is an effort to create legal recognition for intersex individuals.
