New York: A passenger train derailed on Monday in the US state of Vermont, injuring four people, authorities said.

"There was a train derailment at 10:30 am in Northfield. It was a passenger train," a spokesman for the Vermont state police said.

Four people were hurt, according to the fire department in Montpelier, Vermont, the city closest to the scene of the accident.

"That's the report we heard from the radio traffic," a spokesman told AFP, confirming news reports.

State police had said earlier there were an "unknown number of injuries" and that multiple first responder agencies were at the scene.

In a statement, train operator Amtrak said there "are no immediate reports of any life-threatening injuries."

It said the train -- the "Vermonter" -- was en route from Saint Albans in Vermont to the US capital Washington when it derailed "after reportedly striking a rock slide on the tracks."
