Washington: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has reportedly announced reward worth 10,000 dollars to anyone who provides information about people laser pointing at airplanes.
Pointing handheld laser has been a federal crime since 2012, but under the new program that would last for 60 days in in 12 regional offices ranging from New York City to Albuquerque, N.M; the FBI aims to deter the dangerous activity.
Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, Michael Huerta said that shining a laser into the cockpit of an aircraft could temporarily blind a pilot, jeopardizing the safety of everyone on board, Mashable reports.
The FBI said that more people were using lasers to mess with airplanes now than ever before, taking aim from anywhere from airports to their own homes.
According to the agency`s report, such incidents happened 3,960 times in 2013, an average of 11 times per day, but no plane crash incidence had been reported.
