Gaza City: A 24-hour ceasefire by Hamas in Gaza appears to have been stalled with the former firing rockets into Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that they will do “what it must to protect its people.”
The rockets were fired by Hamas which blamed Israel for failing to adhering to the ceasefire, as per a BBC news report.
The truce was agreed by Hamas ahead of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr.
The attacks were resumed on Sunday after Hamas blamed Israel for “lack of commitment.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel will not let a “terrorist organisation decide when it`s convenient to fire at our cities, at our people, and when it`s not,” the AP reported.
Over 1,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the last 20 days since the beginning of war while 43 Israeli soldiers and two civilians and a Thai worker were killed.
The failure of ceasefire has concerned international diplomats who were hoping for an extension of the 24-hour truce to a longer period.
The United nations Security Council called for a meeting and urged the warring sides "to accept and fully implement the humanitarian cease-fire into the Eid period and beyond," the AP report stated.
