London: Britain`s armed forces are working on contingency plans for military action as a response to "the chemical weapons attack" in Syria, British media quoted Prime Minister David Cameron`s spokesman as saying on Tuesday.

Claiming "unacceptability" of "any use of chemical weapons" in Syria, the spokesman urged the international community to respond to that, Xinhua reported.

Cameron will continue talks with international leaders to agree on a "proportionate response" that will "deter" Bashar Assad`s regime from using toxic agents on the Syrian population, Downing Street said.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has already said the West could act on Syria even without full UN Security Council backing.

Cameron will chair a National Security Council meeting on Wednesday to discuss potential actions against Syria.

In a phone call with Russian President Putin Monday, Cameron said: "There was little doubt that this was an attack carried out by the Syrian regime." But Putin said that they did not have evidence of whether a chemical weapons attack had taken place or who was responsible.
