Rahul Gandhi takes potshots at Modi, Mamata in Bengal rally, says time to bring Congress in power

Kolkata: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took potshots at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while addressing a gathering of party workers at Netaji Indoor Stadium here.

In a scathing attack on PM Modi over One Rank One Pension issue, Rahul Gandhi said, “Before elections Modi ji said that after coming to power, they will implement OROP immediately. However, it's been one year, but nothing has been done.”

He further criticised PM Modi over Land Bill issue and said, “We fought for the farmers. When the issue of land was raised in Nandigram, looking at that, we brought in a bill. Modi ji says everybody will get jobs. Tell me did you all get jobs?”

Taking jibe at Mamata Banerjee's Bangladesh visit, Rahul said, “During Congress regime, PM wanted to visit Bangladesh. We asked Mamata ji to accompany him, but she told us Ekla chalo re. And now when Modi ji is there she is like Hum ek sath chalenge.”

“Usually you put one foot on brake. Left government did the same on development works and you threw them out. Now, Mamata di has put both the foot on brake. Now it is up to you to throw her out of the car and put Congress in driving seat. We will press accelerator,” he added.

Recalling his childhood, Rahul said, “When I was a kid, my grandmother (Indira Gandhi) used to bring mishti doi for me. Today, I had bekti and mishti doi here.”

Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi  addressed the jute mill workers at Wellington Mill grounds and assured them that he will always stand by their side.

Addressing the gathering, Gandhi said, “Jaha bhi kamzor log hai, waha Rahul Gandhi khada dikhai dega (Rahul Gandhi will always be seen with the weaker section.)

Later, Gandhi also met home buyers at the Port Trust guesthouse and listened to their concerns.

"Met home buyers who raised an issue similar to what I have been raising about land acquisition bill. They have been committed certain things that they have not got," he was quoted as saying by ANI.

Gandhi`s interaction with jute mill workers comes against the backdrop of a number of jute factories in the state closing down.

Before his rally, West Bengal Congress claimed that TMC goons tore down Rahul Gandhi's hoardings at Netaji Indoor Stadium with KMC help.

Incidentally, Gandhi`s trip comes on a day when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are on their two-day visit to Bangladesh.
