Balurghat: The nurse, who allegedly cut off the thumb of a 10-day-old baby at a hospital in West Bengal's South-Dinajpur district, was arrested on Wednesday.

IC of Balurghat Police station Bipul Banerjee said that the accused nurse Rekha Sarkar was produced in a local court, where the police has sought five days of police remand.

The accused was earlier asked to proceed on an indefinite leave after the accidental amputation of the baby's thumb.

On July 12, the left thumb of the 10-day-old baby was allegedly snipped off with a scissor while removing the saline tube. The thumb was traced to a dustbin and could not be grafted to the new-born's palm as the referral hospital, 300 km away in Siliguri, had no plastic surgeon.
