Kolkata hit-and-run case: Charge sheet to be filed in March

Kolkata Police is planning to file charge sheet by mid-March in the Red Road hit-and-run case in which an Air Force official was killed by a speeding car during Republic Day parade rehearsal.

Kolkata: Kolkata Police is planning to file charge sheet by mid-March in the Red Road hit-and-run case in which an Air Force official was killed by a speeding car during Republic Day parade rehearsal.

Quoting the Test Identification Parade (TIP) report where witnesses identified 24-year-old Sambia Sohrab as the person driving the Audi on the January 13 morning, a highly-placed source in Kolkata Police told PTI preparations are on to frame the charge sheet.

"The process has already been initiated and hopefully we will be able to produce the charge sheet by mid-March," the officer said.

"Two constables identified Johnny and Sanu alias Shahnawaz Khan (as present) in the second car (Skoda), while 14 others, including Air Force officials and civilians, identified Sambia as the driver of the Audi that hit the Air Force officer and fled," the officer said today.

An onduty traffic constable at the Kidderpore Road identified Sambia as driving the Audi alone, breaking one guard rail after crossing the South Gate before speeding into the Red Road area where the parade rehearsal was taking place.

Two other constables also confirmed the traffic cop's version that Sambia was alone in the brand new vehicle while Sonu and Johnny were in the other.

In the TIP, the three accused were paraded with 27 others for the witnesses to identify at the Presidency Jail last week under the supervision of Metropolital Magistrate Amitabha Das.

"With these witnesses identifying the accused, it will make things easier for us to frame the charge sheet. Now we will have to compile all the reports including this one (TIP report) apart from our investigations into the case. The process has already been initiated" the officer said.
