Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has ordered
recounting of votes polled for the Balurghat Lok Sabha seat
which was won by a Left Front candidate in elections held last
year.
The direction came yesterday on a petition filed by
Trinamool Congress candidate Biplab Dutta, who had lost the
election from the constituency, alleging an error in the
counting.
Prima facie satisfied that there was a possibility of
irregularities in the counting of votes following the election
to the seat on April 30 last year, Justice Maharaj Sinha
directed West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Meera Pandey to
recount the votes on July 26 in the presence of all the
candidates who had fought the elections for the Balurghat
seat.
It was for the first time since electronic voting
machines (EVM) were introduced in the state that a court has
given a recounting order.
RSP`s Prasanta Majumdar had won the seat defeating Dutta
by 5,105 votes.
