Kolkata: As the political parties are preparing ground to contest the upcoming gigantic elections in West Bengal, the BJP suffers a major blow as the party's minority wing president Shakeel Ansari has resigned, stating the party has not fielded any Muslim candidate in the 52 seats which it has announced.
He further alleged that the members of the minority community have been made a showpiece by the BJP in the state.
According to an Indian Express report, the Muslim BJP workers from Labhpur in Birbhum district are outraged and have threatened mass exudes unless their demands are met.
Muslims comprise a major percentage of the total population of West Bengal. It may turn crucial for the BJP to ignore the community if it plans to improve its tally in the state.
At present BJP has only one MLA in the state Assembly which comprises of 294 seats.
In the 52 candidates list announced by the BJP, Chandra Kumar Bose, grandnephew of Subhash Chandra Bose, has been fielded against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhawanipur constituency. State party chief Dilip Ghosh will contest Kharagpur Sadar seat.
Bengali film and TV actress Locket Chatterjee will contest Mayureswar while Samik Bhattacharya, who became the first BJP MLA in the assembly after winning a bypoll, will fight from Basirhat Dakshin, which he currently represents. Actor Joy Banerjee will try is luck from Suri.
