13 arrested for ransacking college, monks` quarters in WB

A total 13 people were arrested for ransacking the prestigious Ramakrishna Mission Silpamandir and the monks` quarters Sarada Pith at the order`s global headquarters here on Saturday following the drowning of a first year student, police said.

Belur (WB): A total 13 people were arrested for ransacking the prestigious Ramakrishna Mission Silpamandir and the monks` quarters Sarada Pith at the order`s global headquarters here on Saturday following the drowning of a first year student, police said on Monday.

Police said the 13 were arrested hours after the incident on Saturday and included relatives of the dead student Sarthak Majumdar.

The 13 were granted bail by a local court yesterday.

Sarthak hailed from Chandannagore and was a first year student of Silpamandir, a prestigious polytechnic college run by the mission. He drowned while bathing after participating in a football match inside the campus on Saturday morning.

The institute authorities had launched a search for the student and informed the police. His body was fished out in the evening. As the word spread armed men ransacked the premises.

Normal classes resumed today, institute authorities said.
