NHRC issues notice to UP Chief Secretary after death of undertrial

 National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary over reported death of an undertrial after alleged assault by prison guard.

Lucknow: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary over reported death of an undertrial after alleged assault by prison guard.

"The Commission has observed that contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. The State Government has been given two weeks? time to submit a factual report in the matter", a release by NHRC said.

NHRC took suo-moto cognisance of the media reports about the custodial death and issued the notice.

Media reports citied that 35-year-old Shyam Kumar Yadav lodged at a district jail in Jaunpur was beaten to death allegedly by prison guards on July 4 for eve-teasing a female colleague. After this incident the inmates clashed with jail officials injuring 26 people, including six policemen.

Two FIRs were registered in connection to the death at Line Bazar Police Station and a judicial probe had been ordered into the incident.
