Lucknow: The Assembly today took exception to a violent protest by lawyers in the city yesterday with the state government terming it as a serious issue which should be "condemned" by all.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan condemned the protest when the Leader of the Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya raised the issue as soon as the House met.
"Lawyers breaking law is a serious issue and society should hang its head in shame over their behaviour," he said.
Showing photographs of the protest published in newspapers, Khan asked the Opposition to "tell what government can do in such a situation"?
"Our officials acted with restraint but the behaviour of the lawyers should be condemned by all," he said.
Maurya said "anarchy" prevailed on the streets of the capital during the agitation and students returning home were the worst sufferers.
"It was the responsibility of the government to ensure the security and safety of the common man," he said.
Suresh Khanna of the BJP accused the state government of failing to control law and order situation, while Congress member Pradeep Mathur blamed police for allowing the situation to go out of hand.
The lawyers were protesting over the alleged murder of 40-year-old advocate Sharavan Kumar Verma. His body was found in a drain close to the place where he stayed in Ganeshganj locality a day before, police said.
