New Delhi: Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy on Monday travelled in the Delhi Metro, including its recently opened heritage corridor, and hailed the mass rapid transit facility as one of the best in the world.
Roy, 72, incidentally is a trained engineer and was part of the pioneering team that created the Calcutta Metro.
"He took a ride in the metro, and was all praises for it. The Governor boarded a train from Central Secretariat Metro Station and travelled all the way up to the Kashmere Gate Metro Station.
"In between, he got down at Lal Quila Metro Station and stepped out to see the design of the structure, as also the bustling Old Delhi the metro line enters into," a senior protocol officer told PTI.
The Governor also spent some time at the new Kashmere Gate Metro Station of the recently inaugurated heritage corridor of the Violet Line service and saw the exhibits on the area's history, put up there.
"He then returned through the Violet Line service and got down at Mandi House Metro Station on way to a press interaction at the Metro Bhawan," he said.
"Though, I am now on in a different profession, but deep within still a 'metro man'. I enjoyed the ride very much.
"Delhi Metro is something that we all are very proud of. I have seen metros in foreign countries too, but this is one of the best," Roy was quoted as saying by the senior officer.
The senior official said it was his first visit to the Delhi Metro. Roy was accompanied by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation chief Mangu Singh during the visit.
"The Governor arrived here Sunday evening and is expected to meet some senior government officials in Delhi. On June 7, he is scheduled to go to Chandigarh, after which he will return home via Delhi," he said.
Violet Line of the DMRC network stretched for about 36 km from ITO metro station to Escorts Mujesar station, up until late last month, when the 5.17-km-long corridor was launched from ITO station to Kashmere Gate metro station.
The three new stations- Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid and Red Fort on this heritage corridor take the Delhi Metro into the heart of Shajehanabad, once the seat of the Mughal empire.
