Sri Lankan court remand arrested TN fishermen to custody

A Sri Lankan court on Monday remanded to judicial custody the 29 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, arrested last month by the island nation`s navy while fishing near near Katchatheevu, an islet in the Palk Strait, till June 16.

Rameswaram: A Sri Lankan court on Monday remanded to judicial custody the 29 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, arrested last month by the island nation`s navy while fishing near near Katchatheevu, an islet in the Palk Strait, till June 16.

The fishermen were arrested with their six boats on May 31 on charges of crossing IMBL and were taken to Thalaimannar by the navy personnel.
Magistrate of Mannar court Aanandhi Kanagarathinam ordered their remand till June 16. They were taken to the prison in Anuradhapuram, `Q` brnach police inspector Kennedy and U Arulanandam, president of Pamban Fishermen Organisation said.
The Sri Lankan Navy personnel had arrested four fishermen of Rameswaram yesterday after they got stranded near Katchatheevu when their boat developed a technical snag.
