Islamabad: After a flurry of rumours about his second marriage to a US-based doctor Tanveer Zamani, former Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari has issued a statement categorically denying the reports.

Seeking to douse the rumours, Zardari's spokesperson Farhatullah Babar stated that the former president was proud to “live and die as the spouse of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and son-in-law of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and would hate to barter away this honour for anything else”, the PTI reported.

"Mr Asif Zardari has the unique honour of being the spouse of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and son in law of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He regards this an honour for which he has endured all sorts of vicious attacks and even jeers and ridicule," the PTI quoted the former president's statement.

The former president's spokesperson also blamed the rumours as being caused by the lady in question (Dr. Tanveer Zamanai), blaming her for avoiding “answers to pointed questions, speaking with double tongue and otherwise employing gestures and pauses in replies to the questions".

Zardari's statement stems from the facts that Dr Tanveer has so far refrained from clearly denying the reports of her marriage to the former president or revealing her spouse's name, local media reports say.

According to some unconfirmed Pakistani media reports, Zardari married Tanveer two years ago secretly and that they have a child named Sajawal.

Some reports also attributed the rift between Zardari and his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to the birth of Sajawal.

However, when asked about Sajawal in a TV interview, Dr Tanveer apparently dodged the question, saying “all the kids of Pakistan are her sons”, as per a report in the Daily Pakistan.

The Daily Pakistan also claims to have access to Dr Tanveer's documents that show her as being born in India's Hyderabad.

The “Permanent Resident Card” of Tanveer as pictured in the Daily Pakistan's report, shows India as her country of birth and her date of birth being 30 August 1963.

The report, however, also shows her “passport renewal form” in which 51-year-old US-based doctor Tanveer's husband's name is Javaid Tehseen Saddique and her father is Ahmed Ali Yahya Farooqi .

From the tweets of Dr Tanveer Zamani, it is evident that she is a staunch supporter of Asif Ali Zardari and PPP (Pakistan's Peoples Party).
