Lahore: Officials of Pakistan`s embassies in Japan and Indonesia were allegedly involved in the illegal sale of properties in the two countries, officials said on Friday.
The National Accountability Bureau has formally sought legal assistance from the governments of Japan and Indonesia regarding alleged corruption committed by officers of Foreign Ministry and others in the sale of Pakistani embassy buildings in Tokyo and Jakarta, the officials said.
According to a preliminary report prepared by NAB, which is Pakistan`s main anti-corruption agency, the market value of the embassy buildings was ignored during their sale.
The possibility that former Pakistani envoys had received kickbacks from contractors could not be ruled out, the report said.
No prior permission was sought from an inter-ministerial committee and no advertisements were issued in the press before the sale of the properties, it said.
The report said Kamran Niaz and Maj Gen (retired) Mustafa Anwar Hussain, the former ambassadors to Japan and Indonesia respectively, had been confronted with the allegations.
The NAB further said both cases involved foreign jurisdiction and foreign nationals.
The issue of mutual legal assistance has been taken up with Japan and Indonesia so that the statements of these persons can be recorded and a complete report will be filed as soon as their response is received, officials said.
