New Delhi: At the age of 13, when most kids are busy playing video games, Jamie Edwards, a student at Penwortham Priory Academy, has achieved the feat of becoming one of the youngest people in the world to carry out nuclear fusion.
The Lancashire schoolboy, broke the record of US student Taylor Wilson, who pulled it off at 14 in 2008.
Jamie started working on the project in October, 2013 in a school science laboratory. He recreated a process known as `inertial electrostatic confinement` which dates back to the 1960s. Jamie`s reactor was able to smash two hydrogen atoms together making him the youngest person to create helium through nuclear fusion in a controlled environment.
The school granted him a USD 3,350 budget to make the project happen.
The nuclear fusion record attempt, by the "amateur nuclear scientist", is yet to be verified by the Open Source Fusor Research Consortium.
