New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday issued notice to Haryana, UP and Rajasthan governments over alarming levels of air pollution in Delhi.

The tribunal has sought a detailed report from the three states about pollution emanating from power plants and the burning of plastics in the National Capital. The states have been asked to submit the report by May 1.

The move came after the release of latest report by the World Health Oganisation (WHO), which states that New Delhi has surpassed Chinese capital Beijing as the city with the worst air in the world.

According to the WHO, the air quality levels measured in 2014 in as many as 1600 cities across the globe showed New Delhi as the most polluted city in the world.

The WHO report shows the air pollution is 10 times higher than acceptable standards in Delhi. The city was also found to have the highest levels of particulate matter, also known as PM 2.5, known to be most harmful to human health.
