Ved Prakash new vice chairman of UGC

Eminent academician Prof Ved Prakash has been appointed as Vice Chairman of University Grants Commission.

New Delhi, May 09: Eminent academician Prof Ved
Prakash has been appointed as Vice Chairman of University
Grants Commission (UGC).

The appointment has been made by the HRD Ministry
after "necessary clearance" from the Election Commission, as
required under the Model Code of Conduct, the ministry said in
a statement.

The post of UGC Vice Chairman has been lying vacant
since February 28 when Prof MC Sharma was appointed vice
chancellor of a newly created Central University. Prakash has
been looking after responsibilities of the position.

Prakash`s name for the post was finalised by a
Search-cum-Selection committee of the HRD Ministry.

The ministry dismissed as "baseless" reports in a
section of press that the appointment was made in violation of
the Model Code of Conduct.

The ministry said another Search-cum-Selection
committee has been set up for appointment of vice chancellor
of Jamia Milia Islamia as the incumbent Mushirul Hasan will
retire on June six this year.

The committee is yet to give its recommendation, the
statement said. The reports about Hasan getting an extension
for five years are "baseless and ill-informed", the statement
said.
