Thiruvananthapuram: CPI(M) politburo member
Brinda Karat on Tuesday alleged that the UPA government at the
Centre has `no political commitment` to pass the Women
Reservation Bill.
"Though the Standing Committee consisting of MPs from LDF
(party-led front in the state) has given necessary suggestions
on the Bill, the legislation is in Parliament freezer for the
past 13 years," she said while laying the foundation stone for
a memorial building for CPI-M veteran, late Susheela Gopalan
here.
She said while the LDF government last week introduced
bills in the assembly to provide 50 per cent reservation to
women in local bodies, the Centre was shying away to introduce
Women Reservation Bill in Parliament.
She also criticised the UPA government for signing the
Free Trade Agreement with ASIAN nations. The agreement would
harm the agriculture-based economy of Kerala the most, she
said.
