UK MPs seek Indian PM`s intervention in Sen’s release

Group of British MPs flay arrest of human rights activist Binayak Sen in India and seek the Indian PM`s intervention.

London, May 09: A group of British MPs have flayed
the arrest of human rights activist Dr Binayak Sen in India
and sought the intervention of the Indian Prime Minister to
get his release from a Chhattisgarh jail.

Describing the detention of Dr Sen, winner of the 2008
Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights, as a
"grave case of violation of human rights", the group said he
is being held on "politically-motivated and trumped up
charges."

They have sought the intervention of Dr Manmohan Singh
to get his release from the Chhattisgarh jail, where has has
been languishing for the last two years.

Human rights activists also plan to demonstrate in
front of the Indian High Commission here on May 14, to mark
the second anniversary of his detention. It is organised by
the `Release Binayak Sen Now Campaign.`

The group has also moved an Early Day Motion in the
House of Commons yesterday but there would be no discussion on
the motion moved by Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn.

The motion claimed that Dr Sen has been denied his
constitutional right to bail and they were concerned about his
health due to lack of appropriate medical care.

The one-paragraph motion demanded immediate release of
Dr Sen, pending a fair and prompt trial so that he could carry
out his work without "harassment and free from fear".
