UGC to frame guidelines for educational institutes on students` safety

UGC has decided to frame comprehensive guidelines for all higher educational isntitutions to ensure safety of students in wake of the Beas river tragedy in Himachal Pradesh which claimed the lives of 24 Engineering students.

New Delhi: University Grants Commission has decided to frame comprehensive guidelines for all higher educational isntitutions to ensure safety of students in wake of the Beas river tragedy in Himachal Pradesh which claimed the lives of 24 Engineering students.

An expert committee would be set up to frame the guidelines for which the Commission (UGC) has invited suggestions from the public in general and stakeholders.

"The public in general and major stakeholders in particular are requested to give their suggestions on measures that should desirably be taken by the institutes for safety of students in general and while they are on educational tour, study tour, field visit, excursions, industrial visits or engaged in adventour sports and any other activity in particular," it has said.

UGC said incidents in the recent past have necessitated the review of measures already in place in the institutes for the safety of students.
As many as 24 Engineering students from a Hyderabad-based college were on an excursion when they drowned in the Beas river in Himachal Pradesh on June 8 due to sudden surge of river water released upstream from a hydro electricity dam.
HRD Minster Smriti Irani had also announced in Parliament that measures are being intiaited to ensure such incidents do not take place.
