Raiganj (WB): Elderly Aftabuddin has been
living in the open with wife and grandchildren ever since the
tornado blew away the thatched roof of their mud house three
days ago at Bajargaon in worst-hit Karandighi of North
Dinajpur district.

"We have nowhere to take shelter and rains have been
lashing our homes daily ever since the storm struck," the
55-year-old man told a visiting PTI correspondent.

Aftabuddin and other villagers today gheraoed district
officials demanding food, drinking water, baby food and other
essentials.

The villagers are in a piquant situation. They cannot
leave for the relief camps as they stand guard to whatever is
left in their damaged houses.

Officials, however, claimed that relief had been
dispatched to the affected areas which remained cut off by
uprooted trees.

"There has been a demand for two lakh tarpaulin sheets.
We are trying to send drinking water in tankers to the
villages," State Relief Secretary, Madan Lal Meena said.

Chitra Dutta, a housewife of Bangalbari village in
Hemtabad block, said, "I have managed with a one piece of
cloth for the past three days. The ferocious wind blew away
everything in front of our eyes including stored grains in the
barn.
