`Safety critical in nuclear power stations`

As India makes forays into nuclear power, the issue of safety will become critical for averting a mishap, head of a leading government-owned firm said on Thursday.

New Delhi, Jan 22: As India makes forays into
nuclear power, the issue of safety will become critical for averting a mishap, head of a leading government-owned firm said on Thursday.
"There is a need to take adequate safety measures to
avoid any disaster as the country is going for nuclear power,"
National Projects Construction Corporation Chairman and
Managing Director Arbind Kumar said.

After being allowed to get into nuclear trade, India is
taking steps for boosting power supply from this source. For
the beginning, the public sector enterprises (PSEs) would be
allowed to set up and run the nuclear power generating
stations.

Kumar said the public sector enterprises (PSEs)need to
take a lesson from the Bhopal gas tragedy taking many lives
and causing great sufferings to people, he said while
inaugurating a two-day programme on `Environment Safety and
Prevention and Management of Chemical Accidents`.

"Formulation of rules and regulations usually come after
an accident," Kumar said stressing the need to incorporate
safety measures while formulating projects.

As responsible corporate citizens, PSEs should adopt
innovative technologies and management practices for
environment safety, he added.

The corporates that do well on environment, safety and
health-related fronts, also rank high in business results and
are among leading players, said Standing Conference of Public
Enterprises (SCOPE), Director Programmes, UK Dikshit.

Environment safety issues are attracting more attention
at national and international level due to adverse impact on
the ecological balance, said Management Consultant, SCOPE, M K
Suri.
