New Delhi: With the Assembly Elections results being seen as a verdict before the 2014 General Elections, Bharatiya Janata Party’s emphatic win in the polls has proved to be a shot in the arm for the party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
The verdict shows that Modi’s elevation has certainly helped the BJP, but at the same time sounded alarming bells for the Congress, as Rahul Gandhi’s extensive campaigning in the states have yielded no results.
The BJP has bagged 165 seats out of 230 in Madhya Pradesh. In Rajasthan the party has created a record by winning 162 seats, leaving the Congress bruised with just 21 members in the 200-seat legislature. In Chhattisgarh too, it gained a majority and thwarted a spirited comeback bid by Congress. In Delhi, the party gained maximum seats, but has fallen short of a majority because of a superb performance by the Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The poll results are a big blow to the Congress as it reflects the mood of the nation which is reeling under the pressure of rising prices, massive scams, slow economy and corruption at all levels.
While the election results are a big boost for the Gujarat Chief Minister’s PM ambitions, it has certainly posed a big question mark on Rahul’s credentials to attract voters. It may be noted that the Congress vice president miserably failed to swing the votes in his party’s favour during Uttar Pradesh and Bihar elections where he had gone on an election campaigning spree.
The Congress seriously needs to think over Rahul, whether he is the appropriate candidate to lead the grand old party for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Sunday expressed disappointment over the results and said that there is a need for deep introspection. People are obviously unhappy with us otherwise they would not have given such results, said Sonia while addressing the media at the party headquarters in Delhi.
Rahul also concluded the results as a message of change from the people of the country.
Rahul admitted that AAP engaged with the people well, saying that the Congress has to learn from party convener Arvind Kejriwal and the newly formed party itself. “We will learn from them, and we will involve people in a way that no one has ever done before.”
