Mumbai: Tarapur Atomic Power Station
(TAPS) in neighbouring Thane district on Saturday carried out an
`offsite emergency exercise` in presence of representatives of
the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) among others
to check preparedness of the district authorities in case of a
radioactive emergency.
"The offsite `radiological emergency` drill (held)
today at Tarapur site of the Nuclear Power Corporation ensured
the capability of district authorities to handle the situation
based on the feedback from various observers," TAPS site
director R K Gargye told PTI from Tarapur.
Vengani village, situated at a distance of five km
from the power station, was selected as affected locality for
the purpose of the exercise, he said, adding that the drill
started at 6:45 AM and lasted till 1 PM.
The observers included representatives from NDMA,
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Atomic Energy
Regulatory Board and various units of the Nuclear Power
Corporation of India.
He said around 100 villagers were evacuated and
sheltered at K L Ponda High School, Dahanu, located around 15
km from the village.
The NDMA had on Friday conducted a day-long workshop
for all the stake-holders at TAPS.
