NSSO data will reveal impact of meltdown on jobs: Minister

The govt on Wednesday said it would be able to assess the overall impact of the meltdown on employment only when new data for jobs are collected by NSSO.

New Delhi, Feb 25: The government on Wednesday said it
would be able to assess the overall impact of the global
financial meltdown on employment only when the new data for
jobs are collected by the National Sample Survey Organisation
(NSSO).

"At this juncture it is not possible to assess the
overall impact on employment at the all-India level since the
latest data on employment (are) based on (an) all-India survey
conducted by NSSO for 2005-06," Minister of State for Finance
Pawan Kumar Bansal said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha
when asked about the impact of the economic crisis on India.

He said several segments, specially the industrial
sector, have been affected adversely due to the global
slowdown. Growth in industrial production has been 3.2 per
cent in April-December this fiscal against 9 per cent in the
previous one and export growth declined to 17.1 per cent in
April-December 2008-09 from 23.5 per cent a year earlier, he
said.

He added the government has taken several measures to
instill confidence in the economy and to "minimize the adverse
impact".
