New Delhi: Two days after Gopinath Munde, the union minister for rural development, died in a road accident here, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkri will on Thursday convene a meeting to review road safety standards.
Gadkari is likely to review the issue of road safety on a number of parameters, such as implementation of law, need for a common database for driving licences, and possibility of engineering interventions, a news website quoted a Road Ministry official as saying.
“The minister is seeking feedback from various departments and police on how road safety standards can be improved and number of road accidents brought down. He will then accordingly take a call on the next step,” the ministry official added.
On June 03, Munde, a senior BJP leader who was once Maharashtra`s deputy chief minister, was going to the Indira Gandhi International Airport to catch a flight to Mumbai when his car was hit by a Tata Indica on the Prithviraj Road five-point crossing at around 6:20 am. Due to the force of the impact, Munde fell down and was helped to sit up by his PSO. Munde asked for water and told his driver to rush him to hospital before losing consciousness.
Gadkari will hold additional charge as minister of rural development, panchayti raj, and drinking water and sanitation, which were held by Munde.
