Dimapur: The police here on Monday said they have identified five of the nine people who were shot dead and their bodies left to decompose in Dimapur in Nagaland.
According to the police the five belonged to the Karbi tribe. Four of these bodies are being currently kept at the Dimapur district hospital.
One of the dead, who has been identified, was a local student union leader who lived in Assam`s Karbi Anglong district.
The nine highly decomposed bodies were discovered in a drain late on Friday by road construction workers who were alerted by the stench.
"We have found nine highly decomposed male bodies from a ditch in Pachaspura area. The eyes were blindfolded with the hands tied behind and were shot from close range on their heads," Dimapur district police chief VZ Angami had said earlier.
Pachaspura area is about 13 km from Dimapur, the main commercial town in Nagaland, bordering Assam.
"We are suspecting that all the nine were killed in some other locations and the killers have dumped the dead bodies there as the villagers in the area have not heard of any gunshots in recent weeks," Angami had suspected.
The Nagaland government has set up a Special Investigation Team to probe the killings.
