Muslims, not Hindus, won Kargil war for India, says SP leader Azam Khan

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan courted controversy when he was quoted as saying that the Kargil war was won by the Muslins.

The Kargil conflict of 1999 was dragged into campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls when Azam Khan was reportedly accused trying to polarise the voters. He is said to have maintained that the “soldier who conquered the mountains of Kargil was not a Hindu but a Muslim”.
Reacting to the statement of Khan, former Army chief and BJP candidate for the Ghaziabad seat VK Singh said that the Kargil battle for India was won by Indians.

Voting for the nine-phase General Elections kicked off on April 07 and will end on May 12. The votes will be counted on May 16.
The high-voltage election campaign has seen a number of controversial statements made by various political parties with charges and counter-charges being levelled by politicians at each other.
