New Delhi: BJP spokesperson MJ Akbar Saturday termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s Bhutan visit as a significant gesture for peace, harmony and hope in the subcontinent.

Stating that PM Modi`s visit honors India`s friendship with Bhutan, Akbar described the neighbouring nation as India`s oldest and most stable friend in the subcontinent.
The former journalist added, "This should be seen in consonance with the PM`s other initiatives such as Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj visiting Bangladesh."

On letter exchanges between the Indo-Pak Heads of State, he said, "There have been letter exchanges with our most tempestuous neighbour Pakistan and an effort has been made to create a new environment, suggesting that peace is a better option than war."

He acknowledged the fact that the talks with Pakistan wouldn`t be easy with reports coming about ceasefire violation by them across Jammu and Kashmir.
Akbar added, "The security of the nation will not be compromised even if we seek a hand of friendship from neighboring nations."

Prime Minister Modi`s two-day visit to Bhutan will commence tomorrow.
