Mexico seeks India`s support for `ambitious outcome` at Cancun

New Delhi: Ahead of the global climate
change summit in Cancun in December, Mexico Monday sought
India`s support to help towards an ambitious outcome of the
meet within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol.

In a meeting with Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh,
Patricia Espinosa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico and
chairperson of the COP 16 meeting at Cancun said, "An ambitious
outcome at the global meet requires India`s sustained
political guidance and support."

Espinosa is on a three-day visit to India to discuss
ongoing efforts to evolve consensus at the Cancun Summit
slated November 29-December 10 this year.

Sources said Ramesh strongly pitched for a “balanced and
equitable" outcome of global climate change negotiations and
has advocated the principle of common but differentiated
responsibilities of developed and developing countries for
curbing carbon emissions.

The two sides discussed ways to share future innovations
on curbing global warming and existing clean technologies
besides steps to plug lacunae in the existing Clean
Development Mechanism.

The Mexico Foreign Minister was accompanied by
Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Lourdes Aranda, Special
Representative for Climate Change Luis Alfonso de Alba and
other officials.

Earlier, addressing the Indian industry at a function,
Espinosa said "Cancun must meet challenges of resources and
technology transfer and predictable sources of finance".

She said global responses to climate change will support
national efforts and clear rules and greater predictability
were essential for the central participants of the global
economy, adding that a successful negotiation will underscore
the importance of the multilateral system.

Mexico, she said, recognised the importance of negotiations for the private sector as well as the need for a
clear and predictable framework for investment.

She also emphasised on "the need to facilitate access to
technology, capacity building and financing for mitigation
and adaptation."
