New Delhi: The Union Cabinet-led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on Thursday and decided to conduct a brief session of Parliament from June 4 to 11.
The Cabinet meet was held at around 11:30 am.
Briefing the reporters, Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu confirmed that the first session of 16th Lok Sabha will be held between June 4 to June 11.
Naidu said that former parliamentary affairs minister and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath will be the Protem Speaker, who will perform the duties of the office of the Speaker till the election of Speaker.
“During the inaugural session of the 16th Lok Sabha, newly-elected members to Lower House will take oath on June 4 and 5,” Naidu said. The first session will also witness election of the new Speaker and the joint address by the President to the two Houses.
The Rajya Sabha session will begin on June 9 with a joint address by the President Pranab Mukheree, Naidu asserted.
The talk in government circles is that it would not act petty on the issue of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha which Congress is seeking.
In the first Cabinet meeting, the Modi government had constituted a special investigative team (SIT) headed by a former Supreme Court judge to unearth black money.
Names doing the round for the Speaker`s post include BJP MP Sumitra Mahajan and Deputy Speaker in the last Lok Sabha Karia Munda.
