CPI attacks NDA govt on natural gas, LPG price hike issues

CPI on Tuesday attacked the government for considering hiking natural gas prices, LPG, sugar and public service charges.

New Delhi: CPI on Tuesday attacked the government for considering hiking natural gas prices, LPG, sugar and public service charges, saying it was "burdening" the masses by allowing the corporates to "garner super-profits".

"On one hand, the Narendra Modi government is asking the people to take bitter pills and tighten their belts, and on the other it is telling the corporates to keep their coffers open to garner super-profits," senior party leader D Raja alleged.

"All such decisions to hike the prices of natural gas, LPG or sugar or raise the railway fares are being taken before the budget. This government cannot function this way," Raja here said.
Regarding the natural gas prices, Raja said it was a "very controversial decision" which had been opposed by the Left parties in Parliament and party leader Gurudas Dasgupta had moved the courts through a public interest litigation.

The Election Commission had also halted the process of hiking the natural gas prices, he said.
"The matter is before the judiciary and any decision should be taken only after a thorough discussion in Parliament," Raja said.
