Country records over 100 custody deaths, 10 rapes in 2005-07

More than 100 custody deaths and 10 cases of rapes were reported in the country during 2005 and 2007, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

New Delhi, Feb 25: More than 100 custody deaths and 10 cases of rapes were reported in the country during 2005 and 2007, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Home Shakeel Ahmad said, out of a total of 118 custody deaths between 2005 and 2007, a maximum of 81 were recorded in 2005.

Similarly, 50 such deaths were reported in 2006 as against 57 in 2007.

Also, there were seven incidents of rape in lock-ups during 2005, he said.

However, there were only two such cases in 2006 and one in 2007.

"Section 176 of the CrPC has also been amended to provide that in case of death or disappearance of a person or rape of a woman while in the custody of the police, there shall be a mandatory judicial inquiry and in case of death, examination of the dead body shall be conducted within 24 hours of death vide CrPC (Amendment) Act, 2005," he said.
