New Delhi: Congress on Wednesday said its leaders
called on DMK supremo M Karunanidhi during his just concluded
visit here as a "matter of courtesy".

"We visited him as a matter of courtesy", Congress
spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters here in
response to questions about Home Minister P Chidambaram, party
leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, in charge of Congress affairs in
Tamil Nadu and herself meeting the DMK chief.
The remark of Natarajan came in the backdrop of
Karunanidhi not calling on Congress President Sonia Gandhi
during the visit.

In Chennai, Karunanidhi explained that he avoided
meeting Gandhi as he felt that it would not be appropriate to
do so when his daughter Kanimozhi was in jail in connection
with the 2G spectrum case.

Natarajan insisted that the arrest of Kanimozhi would
not have any adverse impact on Congress-DMK ties as the party
has always made it clear that the investigations have been
monitored by the Supreme Court. "Congress has always taken
transparent action against corruption", she added.
Azad during the meeting with Karunanidhi had said
Gandhi is concerned about Kanimozhi being in jail and he
expressed sympathies with DMK over the issue.

Karunanidhi met Kanimozhi at Tihar Jail in Delhi on
May 23, spending nearly an hour with her.
