CBI director meets MoS Personnel Jitendra Singh

New Delhi: CBI Director Ranjit Sinha on Wednesday held a meeting with Union Minister Jitendra Singh, a day after the Narendra Modi government talked about restoring the credibility of the agency.

Officials in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions did not divulge the details of the meeting but said it was a courtesy call by Sinha to the newly-appointed minister.

CBI was often termed the "Congress Bureau of Investigation" by BJP during the 10 years of UPA rule and Singh had yesterday said that the NDA government would work towards "restoring" the credibility of the agency and giving it functional autonomy to ensure complete independence in its operations.
"We are of the considered view that all the organisations, including CBI, were conceived with the noble objective that they would function as independent bodies and act as perhaps the last resort to seek justice.

"Therefore, we would like to restore the credibility of CBI in order to ensure the people of this country have confidence that at least they have one agency which would give them a fair deal," Singh had said yesterday after taking charge as the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions here.

The ministry acts as the nodal department to provide administrative support for the functioning of CBI.
"We will try to give that (whatever autonomy may be required) so that the objective with which the agency has been formed does not take a back seat," the minister had said.
