New Delhi: The bail plea of CLB member R
Vasudevan, who is in judicial custody in a graft case, was
today dismissed by a Delhi court which said "the menace of
corruption is rising among civil servants.

"Considering the facts of the case and the fact that
the investigation is still at an initial stage, I am not
inclined to enlarge the accused on bail," Additional Sessions
Judge O P Saini said.

Vasudevan was arrested by CBI on November 23 along
with a company secretary of a leading vernacular daily Manoj
Banthia for allegedly taking Rs 7 lakh bribe to pass a
favourable order in a matter relating to the daily.

The court, dismissing the bail application, considered
CBI`s plea that it had found the accused had amassed Rs 2.27
crore in the form of cash and bank deposits.

Around Rs 55 lakh cash, including the bribe money, was
recovered from Vasudevan`s residence here during a search at
the time of his arrest.

Later, CBI, during the custodial interrogation of
Vasudevan, found he had kept Rs 1.21 crore cash in various
lockers. Besides this, he had also kept Rs 51 lakh as deposits
in various banks, the prosecutor said.

"It is apparent that the accused is a very senior
officer and he is indulging in such corruption is an extremely
serious matter," the court, citing various Supreme Court
judgements, said.
