New Delhi: Delhi will finally have a government. Ending the fortnight-long deadlock, the Aam Aadmi Party said on Monday that they were ready to form the government in the national capital with outside support from the Congress.
AAP had sought people`s opinion on whether they should go ahead and form the government with Congress` support. Addressing the press today morning, they said that they had decided to go with the results of the `referendum` which overwhelmingly favoured the party taking the reins of power,.
Later, AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal met Lt Governor Najeeb Jung and and handed over him a letter staking claim to form government. Kejriwal will in all probability be the next chief minister of of Delhi. He has said that the swearing-in ceremony will be held at a public event in the Ramlila Maidan.
The date and timing of the swearing-in ceremony would be decided once President Pranab Mukherjee gives his decision, Jung told Kejriwal when he met him.
However, now that the decision to form the government has been taken, speculations are rife as to what will Kejriwal`s cabinet look like and who is likely to get which portfolio, even though there has been no official word about it from the AAP.
There has been a lot of buzz around AAP leader Manish Sisodia, a former journalist, who won from the Patparganj seat. He defeated Nakul Bhardwaj of BJP by 11,478 votes. Sisodia is a prominent face of the party and has been the by Kejriwal`s side right from the beginning. He is also the a member of the party`s political affairs committee. He may be given an important portfolio.
Saurabh Bhardwaj is another one who may become a minister in the new government. The 34-year-old defeated Ajay Kumar Malhotra, son of veteran BJP leader VK Malhotra, by 13,092 votes in Greater Kailash.
The 40 year old Vinod Kumar Binny has been elected from Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi. He has done his graduation from Delhi University and defeated heavyweight AK Walia, the former health minister. He has been a ex-Congress member and he is also someone who could be given a key berth.
Somnath Bharti, the 39-year-old, who was also president of the IIT-Delhi alumni association and defeated BJP`s Arti Mehra and Kiran Walia of Congress in Malviya Nagar, is another name that is being talked about.
Rakhi Birla, a former journalist, who defeated Raj Kumar Chauhan, a minister in the Sheila Dikshit government, from Mangolpuri and Bandana Kumari, who defeated BJP`s Ravinder Nath Bansal by over 10,000 votes from Shalimar Bagh, are also said to be in contention for ministerial berth.
Jarnail Singh, who won from Tilak Nagar and Veena Anand, who won from Patel Nagar, may also get lucky.
