Another key accused in Jnaneswari case arrested

Another key person allegedly involved in the May 28 Jnaneswari derailment that claimed 148 lives was arrested on Monday from a village in West Midnapore district, police said.

Jhargram (WB): Another key person allegedly involved in the May 28 Jnaneswari derailment that claimed 148 lives was arrested on Monday from a village in West Midnapore district, police said.

Lakshmikanta Ray, (42), whom CBI had named as one of the most wanted in the case and announced a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, was picked up by the agency with the help of state police at Manikpur village in Jhargram police station area.

Ray was involved in preparing the blueprint for the sabotage that caused the train derailment along with his accomplices, they said.

A total 12 persons have now been arrested in the case. Asit Mahato and Umakanto Mahato, the two key accused, are still at large.

Thirteen coaches of the Mumbai-bound Jnaneswari Express had derailed in the fateful night and five bogies were crushed by a goods train coming from the opposite direction.
