New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh on Sunday supported President Pranab Mukherjee`s statement that populist anarchy is not a substitute for governance, asserting that the dignity and prestige of the democratic system should not be undermined by anarchic attitude.

"I completely agree with the President. In this independent India, if the system breaks then the country also falls. The dignity and prestige of the democratic system should not be challenged by anarchic attitude,` he told media here today.

BJP Delhi unit chief Vijay Goel said that the entire nation is watching the way Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is functioning.

"President Pranab Mukherjee might have made a general statement. But I think the nation is watching the way AAP is functioning, and people`s expectation from AAP is breaking. Because of their arrogance and pride, they are not ready to correct their mistakes," he added.

President Pranab Mukherjee, on the eve of Republic Day, said that populist anarchy is not a substitute for governance, and added that 2014 will be a crucial year for the country on all fronts.

"Government is not a charity shop. Populist anarchy cannot be a substitute for governance. False promises lead to disillusionment, which gives birth to rage, and that rage has one legitimate target: those in power," he said.
