New Delhi: Bhartiya Janta Party on Sunday hit back on Congress and Cobrapost for the allegations made against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi`s close aide Amit Shah for misusing his powers and snooping on a young woman in 2009.
BJP`s national spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi in a press conference said, "These people (Congress) have stooped to a new low as such attempts are being made to malign a popular leader."
She further added, "Congress and Cobrapost are violating privacy of the woman. How could such classified information leaked? Telegraph act has been violated. Congress has no locus standi to demand a probe when neither the girl involved in the controversy nor her family members have said anything."
While calling the surveillance of the woman legal, Lekhi also clarified that the girl`s father in his statement has made it clear he knew about everything.
Congress members Manish Tiwari, Girja Vyas and Jayanthi Natrajan had earlier in the day slammed Amit Shah for stalking the young woman in 2009. Moreover, the party has demanded judicial probe into the matter.
Investigative news websites Gulail and Cobrapost on Friday made public a half-an-hour tapped telephonic conversations, purportedly between Shah and Gujarat IPS officer GL Singhal, in which BJP general secretary is allegedly heard directing police to put a young woman and a senior IAS officer under illegal surveillance in 2009 when he was Gujarat’s minister of state for home.
