Alliance with strong regional parties can transform polity: Yechuri

Only an alliance of CPI(M) with strong regional parties like AIADMK and not individuals like BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi can help drive out "twin evils" of corruption and fundamentalism, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechuri said.

Kanchipuram: Only an alliance of CPI(M) with strong regional parties like AIADMK and not individuals like BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi can help drive out "twin evils" of corruption and fundamentalism, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechuri said.

"If our party aligns with strong regional parties like AIADMK it can transform our polity. Only such an alliance and not individuals like Modi, can drive out the twin evils of corruption and fundamentalism which people long for," he told a public meeting here Sunday night.

Yechury, who received Rs 8.56 lakh collected from the public, said the amount would be used for the coming Lok Sabha polls and added that the party`s policy was not to receive funds from corporates.
He said CPI-M`s demand that corporates who fund parties should be compulsorily made accountable to Lokpal had been opposed by not only by the Congress, but by BJP as well.

He said only AIADMK and their allies were with the Left parties on this issue raised in Parliament. Significantly, UPA`s erstwhile ally DMK had voted against such a proposal.

Yechury claimed it was due to the support of Left parties that Congress had `routed` BJP in the 2009 polls. But that party had let down the people by not implementing the Common Minimum Programme in full.
The Right to Food security and Education remained unfulfilled citing reasons of cost overruns. At the same time scams like 2G and coal scam were "eating up" the common man`s wealth, he alleged.
