Jodhpur: The official committee, that probed the alleged wastage of 742 donated eyes by the S N Medical College here, on Thursday stated in its report to the Rajasthan government that there was no misuse of the organs.
The committee checked the record of the eye bank of the medical college and prepared a final report on the eyes obtained by it and their use.

The committee comprised Chief medical and Health Officer of Jodhpur N K Saxena, Joint Director (Medical Edu) Ummed Singh and Vice Principal of S N Medical College Narendra Chhangani along with Joint Director (Blindness Control Program) Iqbal Bharti from Jaipur.

Chhangani said a 52-page report has been prepared and submitted to the state government, both in physical and digital form.

"The committee members including me visited the eye bank and obtained the record right from the inception with respect to the total eyes donated and their use," he said, adding that there was only an absence of clarity on the matter as nothing objectionable was found.

He said that it is a routine practice of the eye bank that a monthly report is sent to the CMHO updating him with the account of the donated eyes.

"We also called that account from the CMHO and annexed it with the report to satisfy the government with the upkeep of the eyes, which are highly valuable for us," Chhangani said reiterating that 742 eyes in question, have not been a waste.

As per the statistics, 168 corneas, which were not fit for transplant have been handed over to the medical student for research and study purpose.

Besides this, 175 were preserved for other medical use and 142 have been utilised for clinical purpose.

However, 257 corneas are lying with the eye bank of medical college as of now.
The matter of the alleged wastage came to light through a reply to an RTI application filed by a resident of Jodhpur.

Virendra Raj Mehta had sought information about the total eyes donated to the eye bank of the college since 1996.

According to details provided by the college, 1,805 eyes had been donated to the college, of which 1,063 were used and rest 742 were not transplanted.
