35-year old K Prakashgouda destroyed sugarcane crop of six months grown on 9.5 acres of land belonging to him, despite efforts by the Revenue department officials not to take the drastic step.

Revenue inspector Ravi Naika told Prakashgouda that the government was making all efforts to get sugar factories to pay the dues to farmers and he should be patient as cane prices would go up in future.

The farmer said his revenue from the yield in the last three years was zero. He had spent Rs 4.2 lakh this time and had earned nothing so far. Last year was Rs 5.87 lakh Prakashgouda told PTI.

Recently, two small and marginal farmers had set the standing cane crop on fire at Narayan Devara Kere in Hagari Bommanahalli taluk in Ballari district.
